Hayes Philharmonic Choir was founded in 1945 and, whilst firmly based in Hayes, welcomes singers from across the borough of Bromley and indeed beyond. We rehearse in Hayes Village Hall (BR2 7LE) and usually perform in the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin – right next door! We are currently experimenting with a shorter rehearsal period, which we hope will attract singers who may not feel able to make a longer-term commitment.
Our music is allied to the classical repertoire, including sacred and secular works. We often perform lesser known but very tuneful and attractive pieces which are much enjoyed by our audiences, and which offer something of interest to established choral singers, as well as to new ones. We are a friendly choir, very welcoming to new singers, who do not need to read music in order to sing with us (though we do ask that they sing in tune). We enjoy the support of a loyal band of Patrons and Friends, who receive concessions on ticket prices, as well as opportunities to socialize with the choir. Anyone who would like to join them would be most welcome.
Ticket prices for our concerts are £8 (£2 for school-age children) and the autumn subscription for singers is £35, which includes music hire. New members may attend up to 3 rehearsals before payment is required.
RODNEY WILLIAMS (our Musical Director) was born in Beckenham, Kent. He was a chorister at King`s College, Cambridge and studied at the Royal College of Music. He was a member of Westminster Abbey Choir for most of his career and is well known as a quartet singer and is Secretary of the Noblemen and Gentlemen`s Catch Club. He has been Musical Director of Hayes Phil for more than 30 years.
KENNETH BAKER (our Accompanist) studied the piano with Wilkinson Urquhart and the organ with Jack Coxwell, both of Bromley. He is a Chartered Civil Engineer, now retired, and has lived in Hayes all his life.
